State officials offer safety tips for Winter Hazards Awareness Week

It's only November 5th, but state officials want you to be prepared for winter.

This is Winter Hazards Awareness Week.

The Deputy State Director of Emergency Management and Homeland Security says taking a few extra steps now will ensure that you and your family are ready before winter weather strikes.

Some tips for preparing your home for winter include insulating water lines that run along exterior walls so they don't freeze, cleaning your fireplace and chimney and cleaning gutters to prevent ice dams from forming.

For your car, you are encouraged to have your brakes and car battery checked and have an emergency preparedness kit with blankets, a shovel, flashlight and first aid kit.
